From the Latin buccula, a buckle is literally a'cheek piece, which was the strap for a helmet, and 'belt' is also from the Latin balteus or `sword belt.' Originally, a military utility, the belt buckle has had a long history. Zippers are a fairly new invention, so if a button didn't do the job, or you're Amish and think that buttons are sinful vanities, then you needed a buckle for your shoes (one, two, buckle my, you know.), buckles for your belts, even dresses had buckles.

You'll find click vintage buckles, large buckles, buckles that measure three or four inches(!!) for sale on eBay, and they'll be cheap. Way cheaper than going to those fancy schmancy vintage stores!
